As a Lead Software Engineer within Optum Rx, you will bridge high-level software architecture, cross-platform engineering, and technical team leadership. In this role, you will define and scale micro-product and API ecosystems that power web, mobile, and digital pharmacy channels across diverse client environments. You will lead hands-on development across web (React.js, Next.js) and mobile (React Native) platforms, driving architectural governance, code quality, and performance optimization. Additionally, you will champion artificial intelligence as a key driver of software engineering efficiency and application innovation, embedding enterprise AI capabilities, ethical AI standards, and modern automation across your engineering team to deliver impactful healthcare solutions.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis, Schaumberg, IL or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Architect scalable, reusable front-end solutions spanning web (React.js) and mobile (React Native) ecosystems for Optum Rx digital platforms
- Establish monorepo strategies (e.g., TurboRepo, Nx) and code-sharing mechanisms to maximize development speed across web and mobile applications
- Define and scale micro-product and API ecosystems powering web, mobile, and customer channels with minimal integration complexity
- Provide hands-on engineering leadership by actively contributing code, conducting pull request reviews, and establishing front-end coding standards
- Oversee performance optimization across web (Core Web Vitals) and mobile applications (reducing bridge traffic, layout rendering, and app bundle sizes)
- Implement robust testing infrastructure encompassing unit, integration, and end-to-end (E2E) automation testing
- Partner with UI/UX designers and backend engineers to evaluate design feasibility and align on RESTful and GraphQL API structures
- Manage the application deployment lifecycle across web hosting platforms and mobile application stores (Apple App Store and Google Play Console)
- Integrate enterprise AI capabilities into team workflows, setting clear development goals to accelerate AI adoption and engineering efficiency
- Champion the ethical use of AI technologies by ensuring transparency, fairness, data privacy, and accountability throughout the software development lifecycle
- Strategically leverage AI tools and intelligent automation to solve complex engineering challenges, optimize platform delivery, and drive business value
- Mentor and upskill engineering team members through workshops, code reviews, and technical guidance, driving team capability growth

Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience developing and deploying scalable web and mobile applications
- 5+ years of experience with React.js and React Native cross-platform development
- 3+ years of technical leadership experience, including leading code reviews, establishing architectural guidelines, and mentoring engineers
- Experience integrating RESTful and GraphQL APIs into front-end applications
- Experience with full-stack technology stacks including Java, Node.js, or Next.js
- Experience leading application releases across Apple App Store and Google Play Console
- Experience driving the adoption of modern developer tooling, continuous integration automation, or enterprise AI capabilities across software engineering teams
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- Experience with monorepo tooling such as TurboRepo or Nx
- Experience optimizing Core Web Vitals, mobile app bundle sizes, and rendering performance
- Experience establishing end-to-end automation testing suites for web and mobile platforms
- Experience designing micro-product architecture for digital pharmacy or healthcare ecosystems
- Experience establishing ethical governance, transparency, and best practices for AI-driven software engineering workflows
- Reside in Schaumberg, IL

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $112,700 - $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
