The Pharmacy Technician prepares medications for patients under the direction of a registered pharmacist. Performs in a support capacity to ensure medications are prepared for dispensing to patients in as safe a manner as possible. May perform other duties related to specialties as well.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Accurately prepares medications for pharmacist review before being dispensed
- Perform tasks involved with preparation and labeling of IV admixtures and associated record keeping
- Packages dry orals, liquid orals and small volume injectables in unit-of-use containers using a combination of mechanical equipment and manual procedures
- Delivers medications to patient care areas within appropriate time frames
- Ensures drug items are appropriately billed to various areas or patients
- Ensures expired medications are removed from pharmacy inventory and stored properly
- Processes transfers and discharges according to established departmental procedures
- Assists pharmacists in maintaining accurate medication profile for each patient receiving medications, according to department and hospital policies and procedures
- Assists with management of drug stock including, but not limited to, shelving new drug stock with proper item rotation, arranging stock and organizing storage areas, documenting need for ordering items, and maintaining proper documentation and record keeping
- Assists in managing incoming telephone calls to ensure proper triage of calls
- Assists pharmacists in ensuring drug storage locations are maintained in an appropriate manner, e.g., floor stock, automated dispensing cabinets, surgery carts, crash carts, etc.
- Assists pharmacists in insuring pharmacy inventory is maintained at appropriate levels in a cost-conscious manner to promote availability of items included in Formulary
- Assists in training and orienting new personnel or students to the departmental services and programs
- Satisfactorily completes required hospital programs
- Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and order of the pharmacy department
- Maintains knowledge of state and federal pharmacy and applicable health care regulations and professional standards as they relate to this job description
- Adheres to requirements of state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations in the performance of duties
- Adheres to applicable hospital policies and procedures
- Maintains the confidentiality of patient information. Maintains the confidentiality of all records as they pertain to the patient
- Understands their responsibility under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules as they relate to this job description
- Per assigned level and specialty, additional responsibilities may be performed
- Performs other related duties as assigned

Working Schedule: Ability to commit to a 40-hour workweek during standard business operating hours, Monday through Sunday, rotating shifts between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Please note that the pharmacy operates on weekends and holidays, and based on business needs, overtime may be warranted.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a Pharmacy Technician Certification program
- Registered Pharmacy Technician and eligible for state registration/licensure
- 1+ years of experience in a pharmacy setting
- Knowledge of use and dispensing of medications
- Knowledge and ability to read and comprehend physician's orders relating to medications and treatments
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and administrative staff
- Proven solid customer service focus
Preferred Qualifications:
- Recent work experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital or outpatient setting
- Experience handling and preparing compounded medications (sterile and non-sterile)
- Experience working in the IV room and preparing intravenous medications
Work Conditions:
- Hospital inpatient setting with both clinical and office-based tasks
- Includes rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays depending on departmental needs
