As a Senior AI/ML Engineer within Optum Technology, you will design and deliver enterprise-scale AI solutions, platforms, and automations that transform healthcare delivery and operations. In this role, you will build scalable ML models, optimize data pipelines, and integrate advanced artificial intelligence architectures into production environments with an emphasis on responsible AI use. Working alongside cross-functional teams of data scientists, software engineers, and product leaders, you will evaluate emerging trends, streamline complex workflows, and deploy cutting-edge technologies to solve high-impact healthcare challenges.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities: 

• Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with an emphasis on responsible use of AI
• Design, develop, and deploy scalable artificial intelligence and machine learning models into cloud-based production environments
• Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and drive continuous improvement
• Evaluate emerging trends in artificial intelligence and machine learning to inform solution design and strategic innovation
• Build, optimize, and maintain robust data pipelines and ML architectures for training, evaluation, and real-time inference
• Collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to translate healthcare business requirements into technical AI/ML architecture
• Monitor, evaluate, and fine-tune model performance, latency, and accuracy in production environments
• Establish best practices for MLOps, including automated testing, model monitoring, version control, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD)
• Conduct code reviews, mentor technical team members, and drive engineering excellence across the team

Required Qualifications: 

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on designing, building, and deploying AI/ML models into enterprise production environments
• 3+ years of experience leveraging AI engineering tools and frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn) to build automated solutions
• 3+ years of programming experience in Python and utilizing modern cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP) for machine learning development
• 3+ years of experience building and optimizing data pipelines and database architectures (e.g., SQL, Spark, Kafka)
• 2+ years of experience with containerization, orchestration, and MLOps tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, MLflow, Kubeflow, or Airflow)

Preferred Qualifications:  

• Bachelors or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related quantitative field.
• Experience with Generative AI frameworks, Large Language Models (LLMs), and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures
• Experience building AI solutions within healthcare, including working with healthcare data standards (e.g., FHIR, HL7) and privacy/security guidelines
• Demonstrated experience mentoring technical team members and evaluating emerging technology trends for enterprise integration

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $120,100 - $214,500 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
